Weeds are incurring the loss of billions of rupees to agriculture sector for which it is the need of hour to adopt latest weeds eradication methods to cope with situation, said University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar.
The seminar on Weed Eradication was arranged by Department of Agronomy, UAF at Old Senate Hall. Addressing on the occasion, he said that the weeds were the enemies of agriculture production. It is causing a loss of water, productivity and land. He said that with the control of weeds, it can not only jack up productivity but also income of farmers. He stressed upon the farming community to ensure technology usage at all stages of crop production. He said that the agriculture is the backbone of our economy, contributing 21 percent to Gross Domestic Product of the country. He added that that poverty alleviation was directly linked to the agriculture sector. The country was far lagging behind in the modern trends. He lauded the steps being taken on the part of the government for the uplift of the sector. He called for stepping up efforts to aware the masses about better management to increase their income in particular and to enhance the country agricultural production in general. Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr Muhammad Amjad said that pathenium had emerged as threatening weed to the agriculture sector in the province. He stressed upon the need for stepped-up effort for the cause. He said that the agrarian productivity can be boosted up manifold by transferring modern technologies to small farmers comprising 90 percent of the farming community in the country. He praised initiatives of the government for the development of the agriculture sector. Chairman Agronomy Dr Riaz Ahmad, Dr Athar Nadeem, Dr Abdul Khaliq, Dr Asif and others also spoke on the occasion.
