Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences - Overview

Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences has recently been established and is comprised of the following two Institutes:

1- National Institute of Food Science and Technology
2- Institute of Home Sciences

 

 

Besides these two Institutes, Department of Food Engineering is acting as bridge between Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology and Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences. Currently the faculty is offering following degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels:

Food is the basic necessity of life and requires by the humans to build & repair tissues, keep the body in good working condition and supply fuel for energy. Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences is striving hard to provide quality education at undergraduate and graduate levels, and develop cutting edge techniques to meet the national and global challenges in food security, safety and human nutrition. NIFSAT at UAF is the pioneer and the only National Food Science and Technology Institute in the country. The main thrust of NIFSAT is the application of Food Science and Technology in handling, processing and preservation of food to cope with the challenges of rapidly growing food industry. There has been significant increase in the establishment of food industry during the last two decades and consequently the demand for Food Technology graduates has increased tremendously at national level and in the Gulf countries. The NIFSAT also has established a Halal Center to cope the demands of rapidly growing halal industry in the Pakistan.
Considering the facts, Pakistani population is suffering from a variety of nutritional deficiency disorders ranging from protein-calorie malnutrition to specific micro-nutrients in certain areas of the country. These deficiencies have resulted in growth retardation, mental disorders and various types of physical disabilities. Beside micronutrient deficiencies, the incidences of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, obesity, hypertension, kidney and liver problems are increasing day by day due to adulterated, unsafe and poor quality diets. To alleviate the nutrient deficiencies and tackle metabolic disorders faculty is contributing towards society through trained manpower in the domain of human nutrition. The Institute of Home Sciences is excelling in the discipline of science and humanities for the purpose of achieving the welfare and wellbeing of the family in an ever changing society. Home science is a dynamic and ever growing field of education. It is a need-based, professionally oriented education to assist family and community towards improved living. It is the key subject in shaping the future course of lives by preparing useful citizens with relevant knowledge and competencies to transform them into efficient custodians of the nation's future.
