Experts at a seminar on Thursday stressed upon the need to enhance efforts to eliminate drug addiction menace from the society as seven million people in the country are drug addicts and counting. They addressed awareness session on impact of drug abuse arranged by Yong Development Corps, Senior Tutor Office, University of Agriculture Faisalabad at Iqbal Auditorium. It was attended by hundreds of the students.
UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that drug addiction was playing havoc with the lives of people and there was a need to create awareness among the masses about menace. He added that most of addicts start drugs just for the sake of recreation, leading to anti-social habit. Eventually, the body demanded frequent use. A time comes, when one can no longer function normally without the influence of such drugs. He stressed upon the need to promote healthy activities sports in the youth which was declining in the country. He said that University had taken tangible steps and promoting no tolerance against drug addiction at the campus. He said that smoking and sale of cigarette is strictly banned. Renowned medical doctor Dr Asif Bajwa psychiatrist said drug numbers were continuously increasing day by day. There are seven million drug addicts in Pakistan and it is counting. He said that the drugs addiction is like the terrorism responsible for taking the lives of innocent people. He said the drug sellers and pushers must be dealt with iron hands. He informed audience that drug adductors always demanded more toxin than ever. He lamented that usage of Shesha was becoming common in the youth. He said the drug addiction among of those social evils, that are sucking the blood of our society and not only the addicts but his entire family also suffers from severe mental and financial stress. Senior Tutor Dr Ather Javed said that the awareness about the effects of drugs addiction was prerequisite to end the menace. He said that the culprits promoting the drugs activities must be brought to the book.
