Speakers at a workshop called for addressing the issue of the malnutrition by saying that 2 billion people Worldwide are facing nutrient deficiency. The international workshop on nutrition was arranged by National institute of Food Science and Technology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad that was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan. while University of Chester UK’s Professor Dr Basma Elahi was the guest of honour. Dean Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences Prof Dr Masood Sadiq Butt also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the country is facing a crisis of malnutrition that was among the worst in the world. He called for food fortification to address the issue of food security. He said that changes in the lifestyle were aggravating the issue. He said that the flour of wheat mixed with maize may be promoted to address the issue. He called for making the exercise and walk in the routine that will help lead to the healthy life. He said that the UAF has launched the BS programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics in order to prepare the trained man force.
University of Chester UK’s Professor Dr Basma Elahi said that effective measures are needed to educate the people about the healthy way of life and to alleviate the poverty from the world. She said that 40% of the country population is suffering from chronic mal nutrition. She said 35% under the age of five children are also victim of malnutrition. She showed her concern that only 42 percent of Pakistani people are food secure whereas 58 percent are facing the food insecure. Prof Dr Masood Sadiq Butt said the malnutrition is resulting in loss of 2 to 3 percent in Gross Domestic Product. He called for talking the measure to address the issue on the part of the researcher and creating the awareness among the peoples. He said that 60 percent of women are deficient of vitamin D. He said that it is the need of the hour to promote the healthy activity among the peoples.
