Today climate change, and energy crises forced the whole world to redesign its strategies thereby to safeguard the biodiversity which is the real beauty and variety of life on earth.  75% of the world food is being generated only from 12 plants and 5 animal species and out of 0.2 to 0.3 million known edible plants species only 150 to 200 are being used by human being. Stated by Dr. G. Raza Bhatti Founder Director of centre for biodiversity & conservation Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur and HEC focal person for International year for Biodiversity 2010 for ministry of environment while addressing the participants of the workshop “Agrobiodiversity: Threats and Solutions” as guest speaker here at New Senate Hall of the University on Wednesday morning. He said we can maintain the ecosystem by contributing and sensitizing the masses about the havoc affects of disrupting the natural system of the universe. Realizing the magnitude of human mismanagement regarding maintaining the ecosystem, the UNO marked 2010 as an international year of biodiversity. He said though population explosion is the main cause of human migration, and over exploitation of available resources but we need to make progress and safeguarding the biodiversity at the same time. Dr. G Raza Bhatti underscored the need to net the rising trend of pesticide, fungicide and application of other chemicals on crops so as to conserve the natural biodiversity.


Addressing the participants as chief guest Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq Dean, Faculty of Agriculture said that Pakistan is blessed with all kind of natural and human resources but we need more care and responsibility to meet the challenges of food security and Agrobiodiversity as well. He told that green revolution of sixties happened for more food for more people with more input, more land, and more chemical caused a gigantic threat to human life which resulted in anxiety, intolerance, female infertility and extreme behavior of the human being.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf told that a strong co-relation between biodiversity, development and poverty alleviation forced us to put our heads together and promote polyculture along with monoculture and reduce the import of the crop seeds that bring various threats to the local habitat. Dr. Ashraf told that he is looking forward to HEC and other funding agencies thereby to develop a state of the art botanical garden along with laboratory and other equipments. Highlighting the challenges caused by human practices regarding biodiversity, Dr. Ashraf told that global climate change, energy crises, water scarcity, import and export problems of agricultural commodities including seed material of different crops are the products of disturbing the biodiversity by the civilized human being. He was of the view that due to human mismanagement, 6 breeds are vanishing every month. He told that South-Western-Asiatic Centre standing from Turkey to Kashmir is very rich and can be termed as wealth of biodiversity is highly threatened by a number of natural and human factors. He emphasized the importance of celebrating international year of Biodiversity (IYB 2010).

Dr. Shehnaz Akhtar Rana Chairperson Department of Zoology & Fisheries, Miss Aneeqa Ali, Farva Anwar and Mr. Rizwan from Lab Schools also spoke on the occasion and expressed their concerns over the drastic situation of biodiversity caused by human practices. Prior to the workshop essay, speech and poster competitions were held to create awareness and inculcate the youth regarding the affects of environmental degradation on the whole universe.
