Experiences in advancing doctoral candidates, in serving on dissertation committees, and in discussions with candidates as they have worked on their dissertations clearly indicate a need for such a document. A systematic approach will assist graduate candidates in managing the completion of their dissertation task. It also has advantages for the advisers because the method can improve utilization of the scarce faculty resource.
