Institute of Rural Home Economics - Overview

The Department of Home Economics was established in 1980-81 with the introduction of Diploma in Rural Home Economics. Where as the two years programme leading to the degree of B.Sc. Home Economics was initiated in 1990.The duration of the B.Sc.(Hons.) Home Economics degree is also extended up to four years to keep parity with the other degree programmes of the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in 2005. B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Economics four years (eight semesters) is also in accordance with the directive of the Worthy Chancellor and Higher Education Commission (HEC). Postgraduate degree programme i.e. M.Sc. in Home Economics (Food & Nutrition) two years degree programme initiated in 1995. These Master holders are serving in women colleges as lecturers, school as Home Economics teachers and in hospitals as dietitians. A number of students are working in development projects and social welfare activities. Department of Rural Home Economics upgraded to Institute of Rural Home Economics in 2012.

Furthermore as the Home Economics is an applied field integrating knowledge about almost every aspect of life and this obtained knowledge satisfy the needs of our women folk of society. Home Economics views the family as a major source of nurturance, protection, income generation through skills and renewal for the individuals of every society of the world. As an educational force, the family significantly contributes to the qualitative developments of its individual members for effective development in respect of self and society. Quite contrary to the present perceived view, Home Economics is much more than cooking, sewing and child development and thereby, the courses of Home Economics are diversified and aimed at the provision of good liberal foundation of liberal arts, Nutrition education addressing to every family of the society.
