Department of Continuing Education - Overview

Department of Continuing Education since 1963 is engaged in catering the training needs of the farming community and to produce skilled manpower in the field of agriculture and allied disciplines through short courses program. The department is mandated to facilitate, regulate and provide policy direction for Continuing Education, in order to meet the domestic and national demand for skilled manpower. The department is in regular process of revising and devising the skill related policies and strategies and implementing training programs in partnership with different departments. In this way the department is responsible to revamp continuing education system at the University in order to fulfill the training needs of the masses. Under this program at present 188 short courses are at the approved list of this department. The main responsibilities of the department include planning, developing, getting approval of the new courses from the Statutory Bodies of the University and organizing the courses besides teaching some of them directly by the faculty of this department. These courses cover agriculture & allied disciplines such as Crop Management, Plant Production and Plant Protection, Veterinary Sciences, Nutrition, Animal Sciences, Agri. Engineering, Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences. These courses are beneficial for intermediate level workers, self-employed people, farmers, housewives and others interested in agriculture business. Duration-wise, these courses start from one week to two years. As a general feature, these courses are being offered around the year in quarterly managed schedule. The purpose of training through short course program is to pass on the latest technological advances to the ultimate users in a brief and understandable way. The department has also initiated some of the linguistic courses i.e. Spoken English, Preparation of IELTS, TOEFL, German and French as Foreign Languages for foreign going students and other interested in the UNO languages. To keep a constant look on revising, reviewing and updating the approved courses and developing the new ones is continuous process.

Recently the department has gone in collaboration with National Vocational and Technical education Commission (NAVTEC) PM, Secretariat. The National Vocational and Technical education Commission (NAVTEC) is the apex body of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Pakistan. The Commission is mandated to facilitate, regulate, and provide policy direction for TVET, in order to meet the domestic and international demand for skilled manpower. Under this collaboration quite a sizable number of short term technical courses are being offered in the field of Livestock, agriculture and services sector.
